Carlos Baylon Jr. clinches bronze in Wushu in World Games

Carlos Baylon Jr. delivered the Philippines its second medal at the 2025 Chengdu World Games, clinching a bronze after defeating Kazakhstan’s Islam Karimov at the Hi-Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium last Tuesday.

Baylon showcased his dominance in the men’s sanda 56 kg division, securing a clean 2-0 victory over the Kazakh opponent. The win not only added to the country’s medal tally but also brought pride to the national wushu team. “I am just happy to win this bronze medal,” Baylon remarked after his triumph.

A standout in wushu, Baylon previously captured gold at the IWUF 10th Sanda World Cup in China last April. True to form, he displayed relentless aggression throughout the bout, relying on well-timed takedowns and precise strikes to overwhelm Karimov.

“I hope I can win more tournaments and give pride to our country,” he added, expressing his determination to continue representing the Philippines at the highest level.

Five days into the competition, the Philippines has already secured one silver and one bronze medal, with several athletes still in strong contention for podium finishes.

Among them is Chezka Centeno, who beat out her opponent on Wednesday to secure a gold medal in the women’s 10-ball event.

Also poised for a medal is Olympic boxer Hergie Bacyadan, who has advanced to the semifinals of the women’s K1 70-kg division. Bacyadan, who identifies as a transgender man, is eligible to compete in the women’s category as he has not undergone hormone replacement therapy, and is now just one win away from securing a spot on the podium.
