“It’s comical”: NBA legend Reggie Miller reacts to league’s talk of adding a four-point line

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is looking for ways to make the league more exciting for fans and is reportedly in discussions about introducing new rules to capture their attention.

One of the proposed new rules is the addition of a four-point line, aimed at increasing scoring. However, this idea has not been well received by Indiana Pacers legend Reggie Miller, who has called it “comical.”

“It’s comical. The league will be a laughingstock, and I will be in front of the line laughing the loudest. Why are we always trying to change and adjust the game?” Miller said.

Miller is well-qualified to speak on shooting, as he is widely recognized as one of the greatest three-point shooters in NBA history. The Hall of Famer spent his entire 18-year professional career with the Pacers, during which he made 2,560 three-pointers while shooting 39.5 percent from beyond the arc. At the time of his retirement, he ranked second all-time in three-pointers made—remarkably, in an era when teams averaged just 13 attempts per game, compared to over 35 today.

Now 59, Miller makes a valid point: the three-point shot has already revolutionized the game. It helped make the Golden State Warriors the defining team of the modern era and of the NBA as a whole. In fact, seven of the highest team scoring averages in NBA history have come since 2017.

In 1980, the first full season with the three-point line, league-wide accuracy was just 28 percent. Today, it has risen to around 36 percent.

Selected 11th overall by the Indiana Pacers in the 1987 NBA Draft, Miller eventually became the greatest player in franchise history—despite early skepticism from fans. He is often cited among the greatest players never to win an NBA championship and was selected to five NBA All-Star Games.

In recognition of his immense contributions, the Pacers retired his No. 31 jersey.
