Jenna Napolis secures silver in jiu-jitsu at 2025 World Games for Philippines

Jiu-jitsu star Jenna Kaila Napolis delivered the Philippines’ first podium finish at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China, capturing a silver medal in the women’s -52kg ne-waza event.

Fighting at the Jianyang Cultural and Sports Centre Gymnasium on Sunday, August 10, Napolis battled South Korea’s Im Eon Ju in a tense gold-medal showdown.

The match ended locked at 2-2, but Im secured the victory — and the gold — on advantage points. It was Napolis’ second consecutive loss to the Korean, who had also bested her in a previous encounter.

Napolis, a reigning champion from the 2019 World Martial Arts Masterships and 2023 Southeast Asian Games, opened her campaign by defeating the UAE’s Asma Alhosani to reach the semifinals, where she edged Israel’s Pnina Aronov to guarantee herself a medal.

Her silver marks the Philippines’ first medal of this year’s World Games and places her just shy of joining an elite group of Filipino gold medalists at the event — Carlo Biado in 2017 (billiards) and Junna Tsukii in 2022 (karate).

The national team is now looking to improve on its 2022 campaign, where Tsukii’s gold in Birmingham, USA, was the country’s lone medal.

In wushu sanda, both Krizan Faith Collado and Carlos Jr. Baylon advanced to the semifinals after dominant wins. Collado overpowered Italy’s Elisabetta Sirto in the women’s 52kg category, 2-0, while Baylon matched the result with a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan’s Saydullo Abdurashitov in the men’s 65kg division. The two will fight for spots in the finals when the semifinals kick off on Monday.

Meanwhile, in muay thai, Rudzma Abubakar had to settle for fourth place after withdrawing from her bronze-medal bout against Morocco’s Oumaima Bellouarat due to a nose injury.
