Manila Marathon to be used as qualifier for Philippine representatives in SEA Games

The Manila Marathon is set to take place on Sunday, August 10, at the SM Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay, and will serve as a qualifying event for athletes vying for a spot on the Philippine national team in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games.

The event is expected to draw around 19,000 runners, including top Filipino athletes Christine Hallasgo, Artjoy Torregosa, Richard Salano, and Arlan Arbois. In addition to local participants, the marathon will welcome international runners from countries such as Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada, among others.

Participants can compete in various race categories, ranging from 5 kilometers to the full marathon distance of 42 kilometers, catering to both amateur runners and elite athletes.

All races will be held on a course certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), ensuring accuracy and compliance with international standards. The event is officially sanctioned by the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) and recognized by World Athletics, making performances eligible for national records and global rankings.

“This race is not only important for me but also for our country, because it serves as a qualifier for our national team for the Southeast Asian Games,” said Rio Dela Cruz, President and CEO of RunRio Inc. “Most of them will be running to assess their performance, and if they meet the SEA Games standard, they have a chance to be selected.”

The marathon route will take runners through key Metro Manila cities including Manila, Makati, Parañaque, and Pasay, passing notable landmarks such as Rizal Park, Intramuros, Roxas Boulevard, and the CCP Complex.

The gun time for 42k runners will start at 12am to be followed by 21k at 4am and 10k at 5am and finally the 3k at 5:30am.
