Alex Eala withdraws from Cincinnati Open 2025 due to shoulder injury

Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala has emerged as arguably the best young player to come out of Southeast Asia in recent years, with the 20-year-old establishing herself as a rising star to watch.

Eala has had a brilliant 2025 in terms of her performances on the court and recently made her Wimbledon main draw debut. Despite a first-round exit at the hands of Barbora Krejčíková, the young star garnered praise from around the world, with Krejčíková even lauding her talent and grit. The World No. 16 also stated that the 20-year-old will be “really good in a couple of years.”

Eala’s recent exploits have made her one of the most recognizable faces in tennis today. However, fans in Cincinnati, Ohio, will not be able to see the Filipina in action, as she has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to a shoulder injury.

Her withdrawal was reported by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) on Thursday, July 31, although no additional details regarding the injury were provided. She will be replaced in the main draw by Renata Zarazua of Mexico.

Notably, Eala was recently in action at the Omnium Banque Nationale in Montreal, Canada, where she faced former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the first round. However, it was not a match to remember, as she exited after a 6-3, 1-6, 2-6 loss.

Despite the early exit, Eala took to social media to reflect on the positive aspects of her experience in Montreal, stating that she had “so much fun on the court.”

“Pretty in pink. Montreal was a short but sweet trip. I had so much fun out on court. Time to rest and recover,” she wrote in her post.

The 2025 calendar year has been jam-packed for Eala, as she has competed in 17 tournaments around the world so far.

Ranked No. 65 in the WTA rankings, Eala confirmed her intention to participate in the US Open, scheduled to begin at the end of August. The Southern Open in Cincinnati was meant to serve as a tune-up for the Grand Slam, but she will now head to New York fresher after recovering from her injury.
