Stephen Curry makes candid admission about NBA future

Golden State Warriors icon Stephen Curry is widely recognized as one of the greatest players in National Basketball Association (NBA) history and is credited with revolutionizing the way the sport is played.

Curry has achieved virtually everything in the NBA and is often referred to as the “greatest shooter” in league history. The 36-year-old has won four championship rings during his career, yet he continues to pursue another league title.

The superstar shooting guard is entering the twilight of his illustrious career, considering he is 36 years old, and recently made a candid admission regarding his NBA future and retirement during an interview with Complex.

“I’m kind of just taking it in two-year chunks. I talked to all the guys who have been in this situation, where they have extended their primes. I’m not nowhere close to that, though. For sure, 100 percent, we got some more years from me,” Curry said.

Curry has been the NBA’s highest-paid player since the 2017–18 season and will continue to hold that title at least through the 2026–27 season, with the shooting guard set to earn $59.6 million in 2025–26 and an NBA-record $62.6 million in 2026–27. However, he will lose that title at the start of the 2027–28 season when the contract extensions of the Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker ($72.5 million) and Oklahoma City Thunder’s reigning NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ($71.4 million), take effect.

Despite his advancing age, Curry continues to perform at an elite level, as evidenced by his averages last season of 24.5 points, 6.0 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 44.8 percent from the field and 39.7 percent from three-point range in 70 games.

The 2025–26 season will mark his 17th year in the NBA, and as it stands, he will be 39 years old when his current contract with the Warriors ends. If he plays through the 2028–29 season, he will join an elite list of only 11 players who have played at least 20 seasons in the league.

Selected as the seventh overall pick by the Golden State Warriors in the 2009 NBA Draft, Curry has spent his entire professional career with the franchise and has achieved legendary status. He is a four-time NBA champion, the 2022 NBA Finals MVP, a two-time NBA All-Star Game MVP, the 2024 NBA Clutch Player of the Year, the 2025 NBA Teammate of the Year, the 2011 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner, a two-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion, a two-time scoring champion, the 2016 NBA steals leader, an eight-time NBA three-point scoring leader, and an 11-time NBA All-Star, among numerous other honors.
