TNT Tropang Giga forward Glenn Khobuntin is set to etch his name in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) record books when he takes the court in Game 6 of the ongoing Philippine Cup Finals on Friday, July 25, at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
Should Khobuntin play in the game, it will mark his 75th appearance of the season, making him the player with the most games played in a single PBA season. He has currently appeared in 74 games, tying him with five other players.
Ato Agustin was the first player in PBA history to reach 74 games in a single season during his Most Valuable Player (MVP) campaign with San Miguel in 1992. Jojo Lastimosa and Johnny Abarrientos matched the mark in 1995 with the Alaska Aces, followed by Danny Ildefonso and Mike Mustre for San Miguel in 1998.
The 33-year-old is the only player on the Tropang Giga roster to have played every game this season, including appearances in the Governors’ Cup and Commissioner’s Cup.
Khobuntin revealed in a media interaction that he was unaware of the record and credited his fitness regimen for the achievement.
“I was only told by the coaches that I had tied the record. I’m not thinking about those things, but of course, I’m thankful because that means I’ve been able to avoid injuries,” Khobuntin said.
“I’m consistent with my workouts. That’s my only secret—because as a player, you need to be consistent. You can’t skip workouts, especially since the game is physical. You need to have your muscles ready,” he added.
The forward is enjoying a quietly impressive Philippine Cup, averaging 7.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in approximately 26 minutes of playing time—although he managed only two points, three rebounds, and one steal in 18 minutes during Game 5.
Khobuntin will look not only to play his 75th game, but also to help Tropang Giga force a do-or-die Game 7 by leveling the series when they face the San Miguel Beermen in Game 6 on Friday, July 25, at the PhilSports Arena.
