NBA Trade Report: Jonathan Kuminga in no rush to re-sign with Warriors amid contract stalemate

The NBA offseason is currently in full swing, with teams making moves to strengthen their rosters ahead of the 2025–26 season, as they aim to challenge for the title.

However, the Golden State Warriors are the only team in the league that hasn’t made a signing so far this offseason. This is largely due to their ongoing contract negotiations with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.

NBA insider and ESPN’s Shams Charania discussed the stalemate between the franchise and the player during an appearance on NBA Today, revealing that Kuminga is in no rush to re-sign with the Warriors.

“He did tell me that he is in absolutely no rush to deal with the Warriors right now, and he is not accepting their current offers. He added that he wants to continue exploring options with his agent, Aaron Turner — whether that’s continuing conversations with the Warriors or looking into sign-and-trade options that are available to him,” Charania said.

“I’m told the Phoenix Suns and the Sacramento Kings are two teams that have made concrete offers to the Warriors over the last week or so. They are two of the more aggressive teams pursuing Kuminga and are offering him the opportunity for significant minutes and a starting-caliber role in their lineups. Those are the two things he wants more than anything,” he added.

Kuminga’s stance has drawn criticism, with many believing he is using his restricted free agent status to create leverage in trade talks — aiming to force a better offer from Golden State or attract interest from other teams. Meanwhile, the Warriors’ front office reportedly expected other teams to trade a key asset or player for Kuminga, which has not materialized so far.

Selected as the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft by Golden State, Kuminga has spent his entire professional career with the Warriors. He won an NBA championship in 2022 during his rookie season and, at 19 years and 253 days, became the second-youngest NBA champion in league history, behind Darko Miličić.

Now 22, Kuminga has averaged 12.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game across 258 regular-season appearances, including 84 starts. Last season, he averaged 15.3 points and 4.6 rebounds in 47 games, starting 10, though he missed two months due to an ankle injury.

It will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds, as the signings of Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton remain in limbo — expected to be finalized only once the Kuminga situation is resolved.
