Basketball is undoubtedly the most popular sport in the Philippines, with numerous leagues present at every level of life in the country — the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) being the most popular one.

A new league aimed at bringing back PBA legends and former collegiate stars aged 40 and above was recently launched by Jimmy Velasquez. Named the V-Cup, the league has brought in former PBA player John Cardel as commissioner and consists of eight teams in its inaugural season, with an average of 25 players per team.

“V-Cup was built on more than just basketball. It’s a league of second chances, lasting brotherhood, and the belief that greatness doesn’t end at 40. We don’t just play the game — we honor the journey,” Velasquez said at a press conference.

Velasquez is the husband of former actress Bianca Lapus, who is known for organizing weekly games across Manila, primarily in Taguig and Makati.

“I’m more on the production and marketing side. Jimmy is the one who really comes up with concepts for our projects. He’s also the one who spoke to the ex-players. They are welcome in this league. This is high-level competition — not just to make them sweat,” Lapus added.

“There are so many basketball leagues for the youth. We’re pushing this one because we were able to get players aged 40 and above, most of whom are already retired. Fans were thrilled to learn that their former idols are back on the hardcourt — and the guys can still play professionally.

“We were surprised by the positive feedback during the free trial season we held last year. That’s why we pushed through with the games this year and officially launched it,” she concluded.

As it stands, former PBA player Mark Isip, multi-time PBA champion Jerwin Gaco, former MPBL standout Jay Sierra, and former NCAA stars Erwin Sta. Maria and Floyd Dedicatoria have all signed up to participate in the league.

The V-Cup will run for three months, with games held twice a week — on Mondays and Thursdays. The first game took place on July 6, with matches being played in Taguig and Makati.
