San Miguel’s Chris Ross is not happy with PBA’s explanation over controversial Game 1 decision

The TNT Tropang Giga held on after squandering a 24-point lead and benefited from a favorable—but contentious—officiating decision to defeat the San Miguel Beermen, 99–96, in Game 1 of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup Finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, July 13.

However, the game’s biggest talking point came with 56 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, when San Miguel’s Mo Tautuaa had a potential game-tying dunk waved off. Officials ruled it as offensive interference, stating that Tautuaa pulled the rim down before the ball went in. The controversial call proved pivotal, as Calvin Oftana later sank two free throws to seal a nervy win for TNT.

PBA authorities confirmed after the game that the correct decision was made, with deputy commissioner Eric Castro revealing that Tautuaa had pulled the rim after converting a slam that initially bounced off the ring.

San Miguel veteran Chris Ross was left fuming after the game and took to social networking platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to slam the PBA by stating that he doesn’t buy their explanation.

“We don’t want to hear any other explanation on what happened last night. Anyone that plays ball knows that it was the wrong call but they will keep trying to explain why they are the only ones in the world that thinks otherwise. Delusional is the word. One foot in front of the other,” Ross wrote in his post.

San Miguel management chose not to lodge a formal protest over the decision. Team manager Gee Abanilla confirmed to the media that while they initially planned to file a protest and even had a letter prepared, they decided not to pursue it after the PBA explained the ruling in a press conference.

The overturned call spoiled what could have been a stunning comeback for San Miguel, who outscored TNT 30–14 in the fourth quarter. The Beermen, trailing 74–92 entering the final period, nearly pulled off a dramatic turnaround behind strong performances from June Mar Fajardo, CJ Perez, and Don Trollano.

Game 2 of the Finals is scheduled for Wednesday, July 16, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and promises to be another thrilling encounter.
