Philippine Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go is pushing for the amendment of Republic Act 10699, or the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act, to ensure increased incentives and provide better opportunities for the country’s para-athletes.
Go has refiled a bill at the start of the 20th Congress to address disparities, particularly for para-athletes, and to help close the gap in the incentive system while promoting equality in sports.
The senator reiterated that Filipino athletes have stood out for their accomplishments in international competitions, including the Olympic Games, Asian Games, World Championships, and Para Games, among others.
“Through the years, we have witnessed how Filipino athletes stand out in various international sports competitions such as the Asian Games, Para Games, World Championships, and the Olympic Games. The accomplishments of our athletes have inspired and brought pride to the Filipino people, demonstrating that we can excel in sports with hard work, perseverance, and determination,” Go said.
However, he believes that there is a disparity in the incentives and support received by para-athletes compared to other international competitors.
“The present law, however, seemingly provides disproportionate incentives for those competing in para-sport competitions. Para-athletics, which is practiced by athletes with disabilities, must be recognized on the same footing as other international competitions,” he added.
If passed, the bill aims to upgrade the benefits for para-athletes and ensure equal opportunities and recognition across all disciplines. It also proposes full tax exemption on incentives, bonuses, and other monetary rewards received by both athletes and coaches from public and private sources.
“As an advocate of sports, we should further advance sports development in the country, especially at the grassroots level, so that aspiring young athletes can improve their skills and, hopefully, eventually produce more Olympic medalists who will bring honor to our country. That is why I keep encouraging fellow Filipinos, especially the youth, to get into sports and stay away from drugs to keep us healthy and fit,” Go concluded.
The 50-year-old senator has long been a proponent of increased support and benefits for all athletes across the country. He had also stood firm in his support for para-athletes during the 19th Congress last year, and it seems that his proposal may finally go through and be implemented in the near future.
