Los Angeles Lakers icon LeBron James is widely recognized as one of the greatest—if not the greatest—players in National Basketball Association (NBA) history, as evidenced by his illustrious achievements, including being the league’s all-time leading scorer.
James continues to prove why he remains a contender for Greatest of All Time (GOAT) status, performing at an elite level at age 40 during the 2024–25 season. He averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game, clearly emerging as the Lakers’ best player. His intense dedication to diet and fitness, combined with refined skills, has put him on track to return for his 23rd season—breaking the record he currently shares with NBA legend Vince Carter.
As much as James has benefitted from his physical gifts, he is also known to possess one of the sharpest minds in the sport, which sets him apart from his peers. The 40-year-old has admitted to having a photographic memory, which gives him an extra advantage on the court—but it can also prove to be a double-edged sword, as it sometimes leads to overthinking.
Rewind to an interview James gave more than a decade ago in 2014, before he left the Miami Heat to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he opened up about how his photographic memory is both a blessing and a curse.
“When I was a kid, my coaches started to say that I remembered things that happened in games from a few tournaments back, and that surprised them. I started to realize how important that could be years later, probably when I was in high school. And then, eventually, I realized that it can get me into more trouble,” James said at the time.
“I can usually remember plays in situations a couple of years back—quite a few years back, sometimes. I’m able to calibrate them throughout a game to the situation I’m in, to know who has it going on our team, and what position to put him in. I’m lucky to have a photographic memory and to have learned how to work with it.
“There are a lot of things that go through my mind during a game. Sometimes I cloud my mind too much. I get to thinking about the game too much instead of just playing. That’s the challenge—because you play so many different situations in your head throughout the game that sometimes it can be hard to focus on what’s really important,” he concluded.
There is no doubt that James has been blessed with multiple skills. What’s most impressive is that he has taken the time to develop and hone the abilities needed to become great. Judging by his performance over a 22-year NBA career and counting, he has firmly established himself as a GOAT contender—alongside Chicago Bulls icon Michael Jordan.
