The Philippine women’s national volleyball team has enjoyed a brilliant run in the 2025 international circuit, highlighted by a historic silver medal finish at the 2025 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Volleyball Nations Cup.

Alas Pilipinas followed that feat with a semifinal appearance in the 2025 VTV Cup, where they secured a bronze medal. Their strong performances have propelled them to 47th in the FIVB Senior Women’s World Rankings—a significant rise from their 66th position in 2023.

Alas Pilipinas players have flourished under the leadership of head coach Jorge Souza de Brito, who believes the team will continue to improve with more experience and time together.

“Exactly what I mean. It’s the chemistry that we need. It comes with time—the more we play together, the more high-level matches we experience, the more we’re going to grow,” De Brito said in a media interaction.

“We had some good matches in the VTV Cup against Russia and Vietnam. The level we started those games at was already high. If you drop your level even a bit, you won’t play a good game—you’ll score only 15 points in a set,” he added.

Alas Pilipinas lost to Russia 25-16, 25-27, 25-17, 25-21 in the semifinals of the VTV Cup. Despite the loss, the team showed tremendous grit and resilience.

“We have to maximize our potential to compete with these teams, and we need to bring that level of intensity every time. We had only one opposite hitter in the lineup, so we had to adjust by assigning other players to cover the position. But even with those adjustments, we still played at the same level. I’m very happy because it shows that if we face challenges during a tournament, we have players who can adapt and fill different roles,” De Brito explained.

The Brazilian coach is currently putting the team through intense training sessions as they gear up for the upcoming Southeast Asian Volleyball League, scheduled for August 1 to 3 in Indonesia.

De Brito has yet to finalize his 14-player roster for the tournament, having experimented with various lineups in both the AVC and VTV Cups. UAAP standouts Angel Canino and Bella Belen started in the AVC Cup but were replaced by Filipino-American stars Brooke Van Sickle and MJ Phillips for the VTV Cup.
