National Basketball Association (NBA) superstar Kevin Durant’s blockbuster trade to the Houston Rockets from the Phoenix Suns became official in the early hours of Monday, July 7 (Philippine Standard Time).
The deal was approved by NBA authorities, with Durant’s trade making history as part of a record-setting seven-team deal — the most organizations involved in a single transaction in league history.
According to NBA insider and ESPN’s Shams Charania, the historic deal includes:
- Kevin Durant and Clint Capela to the Houston Rockets
- Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, Daeqwon Plowden, Rasheer Fleming, Koby Brea, and a second-round pick to the Phoenix Suns
- Alex Toohey and Jahmai Mashack to the Golden State Warriors
- David Roddy, cash, and a second-round pick swap to the Atlanta Hawks
- Adou Thiero to the Los Angeles Lakers
- Two second-round picks to the Brooklyn Nets
- Rocco Zikarsky, two second-round picks, and cash to the Minnesota Timberwolves
The Rockets’ management announced in the early hours of Tuesday, July 8 (Philippine Standard Time), that Durant will wear the No. 7 jersey for his new team — a marked departure from the number he wore with the Phoenix Suns. The 36-year-old wore No. 35 with the Suns and throughout most of his career, except during his stint with the Brooklyn Nets, where he also wore No. 7.
Durant is widely considered one of the greatest players in NBA history. He spent three seasons with the Suns, during which he averaged 26.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game, although he failed to lead the franchise past the second round of the playoffs during his tenure.
The superstar took to social networking platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to share a farewell message with all of his Suns fans and supporters:
“My time in Phoenix has come to an end. All these stops along the journey have really impacted me in a positive way. Remember it’s a world behind the scenes, and those who make things work in that space work tirelessly to make our lives easier as players. I appreciate all the quick interactions with everybody — from support staff to teammates’ distant cousins. It’s all a family that I’m grateful to be a part of, no matter what. I truly believe this NBA is one big community.
“Much love to Arizona. Houston. Can’t wait.”
It will be intriguing to see how Durant meshes with the likes of Alperen Şengün and Amen Thompson at the Rockets. Regardless, acquiring the forward is a big move for the franchise.
Durant was selected second overall by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 2007 NBA Draft. He is a two-time NBA champion, two-time NBA Finals MVP, the 2014 NBA MVP, two-time NBA All-Star Game MVP, 2008 NBA Rookie of the Year, a four-time NBA scoring champion, and has earned 15 NBA All-Star selections, among other honors.
