Scottie Thompson calls LA Tenorio a “Legend & Idol” after game-winning shot in Game 6

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel needed a miracle to defeat the San Miguel Beermen in Game 6 of their Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) semifinals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, July 6 — and they got it from the league’s very own “Iron Man,” LA Tenorio.

Barangay Ginebra stunned San Miguel, 88–87, coming from behind as Tenorio drained a game-winning three-pointer to complete a dramatic victory. The 40-year-old veteran changed the face of the game after coming off the bench in the fourth quarter to score 11 points — including the clutch shot with 3.1 seconds left on the clock.

Ginebra’s victory was made possible by the combination of veteran play from Tenorio and guard Scottie Thompson, much like in years past. While Tenorio got most of the attention and plaudits for his match-winning performance, his longtime teammate Thompson continued his consistent run, finishing with 17 points, eight assists, and eight rebounds.

Notably, it was Thompson who made the game-winning assist — and he paid tribute to the 40-year-old Tenorio after the win, calling him a “legend.”

“It was a classic game by Kuya LA. Thank you, Kuya LA, nabigyan kami ng another chance na makarating sa Finals. Nag-draw si Coach Tim to create a play para makakuha kami ng breakdown, and luckily, nakita ko si Kuya LA. Classic. Legend. Idol. Wala na akong masabi,” Thompson said.

The duo has been creating magic on the court for Ginebra under Coach Tim Cone since 2015, powering the team to seven PBA championship titles. Tenorio has earned three PBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors in that span, while Thompson has won two.

In addition to praising Tenorio, Thompson also credited the entire team for the win, especially for coming back from a 16-point deficit.

“Credit to the whole team. Talagang walang sumuko. Talagang whatever it takes — manalo o matalo — at the end of the day, binigay namin lahat,” he concluded.

With the best-of-seven semifinal series now tied at 3–3, the do-or-die Game 7 is a winner-takes-all clash scheduled for Wednesday, July 9, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
