Two familiar faces from Cebu’s boxing scene, Ramel Macado Jr. and Pete Apolinar, showcased remarkable resilience and scored significant comeback victories in the undercard of a Sanman Boxing event held in General Santos City last Sunday. Their wins mark crucial bounce-back moments in their respective careers.
Macado Claims PBF Title in Gritty Performance
Ramel Macado Jr., a former standout of the ARQ Boxing Stable, continued his resurgence by outpointing Adrian Dulayba to capture the Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) super flyweight title. Macado secured a dominant unanimous decision in their 10-round war, with judges scoring it 97-92 and 98-91 twice.
Despite the wide margins on the scorecards, Macado had to dig deep. He scored a well-timed counter right hook knockdown in the second round, but Dulayba refused to back down, unleashing a barrage of punches that briefly wobbled Macado with a sharp left hook.
Macado, however, recovered quickly and responded with heavy blows of his own, staggering Dulayba multiple times in the exchanges that followed. Both fighters maintained a high pace, but Macado’s composure and sharpness in the later rounds ultimately secured him the hard-fought victory.
This triumph marks a significant step in Macado’s recovery after suffering a first-round knockout loss last year. His record now stands at 10 wins (5 KOs) against one defeat, while Dulayba dropped to 7-2 (4 KOs).
Apolinar Stops Canada in Spirited Bout
In another compelling undercard bout, Pete Apolinar, now fighting under the ZIP Sanman Boxing Team, stopped Pablito Canada via seventh-round technical knockout in their scheduled eight-rounder. Apolinar, previously affiliated with Omega Boxing Gym and Prime Fight, displayed flashes of the form that once earned him multiple regional title opportunities.
Apolinar utilized crisp jabs and well-timed combinations to repeatedly pin Canada against the ropes, unleashing heavy punches throughout the contest. The fight evolved into a slugfest in the later rounds as both fighters began to slow down and trade toe-to-toe.
However, Apolinar’s accuracy and power proved superior, taking their toll on Canada. Recognizing the significant punishment he was enduring, Canada’s corner opted not to answer the bell for the seventh round, giving Apolinar the TKO win.
This victory improves Apolinar’s record to 18 wins (11 KOs), six losses, and one draw, effectively snapping a two-fight skid he had suffered in Japan. Canada, meanwhile, dropped to 8-28-6.
The General Santos City boxing card delivered an evening of exciting fights, with Macado and Apolinar’s comeback wins serving as a testament to their perseverance and determination in the challenging world of professional boxing.
