The Petro Gazz Angels bounced back from their opening-game loss to the Nxled Chameleons in the ongoing Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour by defeating the Galeries Tower Highrisers, 25-23, 25-21, 26-24, on Sunday, June 29, at the Batangas City Sports Center.

Following the loss to Nxled, Petro Gazz head coach Koji Tsuzurabara relied on experience against Galeries Tower—and it paid off. The team’s veterans led from the front to secure the win. Myla Pablo paced the squad with 14 points, while Jonah Sabete and Joy Dacoron added 10 points each. Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Marian Buitre also contributed, finishing with seven and five points, respectively.

“We told them it’s just the first game and that we still have a lot of games to bounce back. We reminded our rookies not to lose hope and to aim to play better in the next game. Inside the court, we tried to guide them—especially Ate Chie (Saet), Nang (Aiza Maizo-Pontillas), and Rem (Palma),” Pablo said in the post-match press conference.

It’s worth noting that Petro Gazz is currently without two key players, Brooke Van Sickle and MJ Phillips, for the PVL On Tour, which has opened up opportunities for the younger players to showcase their talent.

“Every team has gotten stronger this PVL On Tour. In our first game, it was really all about adjustments—our rookies were still finding their footing, and MJ and Brooke weren’t there. But whoever is here, we know they’ll find a way to step up for the team.

“We reminded ourselves not to focus on who’s missing but to contribute as a team. Players like Nicole Tiamzon, AA Adolfo, and Jonah are here, and we know they’ll step up this PVL. You could really see that everyone moved well in the game. I think we just fell short in our first match because we were still adjusting. We need to work on communicating more and being louder as a team,” she added.

The victory ensured that Petro Gazz finished its Batangas stint with a 1-1 record in Pool A. They now have a long break before facing the PLDT High Speed Hitters on Saturday, July 12, in Ilagan City.

“Of course, there’s pressure since we are the defending champions, but we always say that every year, teams get stronger. So we can’t be complacent. Coach also wanted to test how far our rookies can go. Even though they were a bit nervous, you could see they contributed well. It’s nice to see the rookies really communicating with us,” Pablo concluded.
