The Vignan City leg of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour saw several top league teams start their preseason tournament, with the Creamline Cool Smashers, Cignal HD Spikers, Akari Chargers, and Capital1 Solar Spikers all seeing action.
The Choco Mucho Flying Titans are set to begin their PVL On Tour campaign on Saturday, June 28, and will enter the preseason tournament without their most important player and former PVL Most Valuable Player (MVP), Sisi Rondina. Rondina will miss the PVL On Tour after choosing to represent the country in beach volleyball, along with Creamline star Bernadeth Pons.
With Rondina absent, the Flying Titans are now leaning on new team captain Des Cheng to lead by example.
“I am happy that I will be the one to represent Choco Mucho in a way, but I don’t take it as a privilege—rather, a big responsibility. The coaches and management told me to just take it day by day and not pressure myself. I don’t have to carry everything—my teammates are there to help me lead the team,” Cheng said in a media interaction.
However, the Flying Titans still have star players Isa Molde, Dindin Santiago-Manabat, and Royse Tubino in their squad and will bank on the trio to lead their offense, while Deanna Wong and Jem Ferrer will handle playmaking duties. The preseason tournament will also give an opportunity for their rookies, including opposite hitter Ayesha Juegos and middle blocker Jen Villegas, to showcase their talents.
“The rookies are happy to be with Choco Mucho. You can see that even with our training held early, they are excited to learn since they are still young and so energetic. They’re affecting us positively inside the court and in training,” she added.
In addition to Rondina, Choco Mucho will also be without Mars Alba, Tia Andaya, and Maddie Madayag, whose return from her stint in Japan will have to wait due to Alas Pilipinas commitments.
“We support our teammates in Alas even though it’s kind of hard for us because we might have the least players. We are really trying hard to transition and hold scrimmages with the players we have left,” Cheng concluded.
The Flying Titans will open their PVL On Tour campaign against the Galeries Tower Highrisers on Sunday, June 28, at the Batangas City Sports Center.
