The Phoenix Suns have made a surprising decision to trade star player Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets during this offseason window, with National Basketball Association (NBA) and ESPN insider Shams Charania confirming the blockbuster deal.

Charania took to the social networking platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to state:

“The Phoenix Suns are trading two-time NBA Finals MVP Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, and five second-round picks.”

The trade between Phoenix and Houston will not be finalized until July 6, with ESPN’s Bobby Marks adding that this delay is due to a restriction in Green’s rookie extension, which he signed last October. It is also understood that the second-round picks involved will stretch through 2032.

Notably, Durant had identified three preferred trade destinations earlier this month, and Phoenix had been in discussions with both the Rockets and the Miami Heat before finalizing the deal over the weekend.

The 36-year-old opened up about the move, saying he’s excited about the opportunity:

“Being a part of the Houston Rockets—I’m looking forward to it. Crazy, crazy last couple of weeks, but I’m glad it’s over with. I gave them some of my destinations, and here we are. They had a great season last year. Love their leadership. I felt like I’ll be a good addition,” Durant said.

This move ends Durant’s two-year stint with Phoenix, after he was acquired at the 2023 trade deadline amid much fanfare. He finished the recently concluded 2024–25 season averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 52.7% from the field and 43% from three-point range in approximately 36 minutes per game.

Durant is a major addition to a Rockets squad with a youthful core led by Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun. Houston finished second in the Western Conference standings this past season and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NBA history, Durant has won two NBA championships, two NBA Finals MVP awards, the 2014 NBA MVP, the 2008 NBA Rookie of the Year, four NBA scoring titles, two NBA All-Star Game MVPs, and has been selected to 15 NBA All-Star teams. He is also the only player in basketball history to win MVP honors in the NBA, Olympic Games, and FIBA World Cup.
