LeBron James reveals whether he will represent Team USA in the 2028 Olympic Games

Los Angeles Lakers icon LeBron James is widely recognized as one of the greatest players in National Basketball Association (NBA) history—if not the greatest—as evidenced by his illustrious résumé, which includes being the league’s all-time leading scorer.

James has won everything there is to win in his storied career, and at 40 years old, he is much closer to the finish line than the starting point. He is set to return for his 23rd NBA season, which would break the record he currently shares with NBA legend Vince Carter.

There is much speculation about when James will eventually retire from the NBA. In addition to his success in the league, the four-time NBA champion has also achieved greatness on the international stage. He has participated in four editions of the Olympic Games for Team USA, winning three gold medals and one silver.

With the next edition of the Olympics set to be held in Los Angeles in three years, James dismissed suggestions that he might participate in the men’s basketball competition on home soil.

“Nothing has changed. Where we at, man, 2025 right now? Nah, nothing has changed. I mean, if I had to look at it right now through a microscope, I would say that me being able to support Team USA for the rest of my life — that’s for sure. But me actually going on and playing, I don’t see it happening. I have given everything that I have, and I will always be appreciative, loyal, and dedicated to Team USA and USA Basketball,” James said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

If this is truly the end of James’ international career, then he will go down in history as one of only three American men to compete in at least three editions of the Olympic Games, joining Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant. The trio are also the only U.S. players to win three Olympic gold medals. Notably, James was also named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the men’s basketball competition at Paris 2024.

LeBron is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in Team USA history, tallying 1,137 points, 342 rebounds, 308 assists, and 122 steals in 79 games for his country. He averaged 14.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.5 steals per game over his international career.
