Magnolia Hotshots’ Zavier Lucero named PBA Player of the Week for the period of June 11 to 15
The Magnolia Hotshots enjoyed a brilliant run in the ongoing Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup elimination stage, winning eight and losing just three of their 11 games to finish second in the standings.
However, Magnolia entered their final game of the elimination round against the TNT Tropang Giga on Friday, June 13, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium needing a win to arrest their two-game slide and secure a spot in the “Magic 4.” A loss would have meant entering the quarterfinals with a twice-to-beat disadvantage against a higher seed.
In that pivotal game, forward Zavier Lucero stepped up when his team needed him the most, finishing with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting, along with eight rebounds, five assists, three steals, and one block to lead Magnolia to an important 88–83 win. He capped his brilliant performance with an eight-point burst in the fourth quarter, including four clutch free throws in the dying seconds.

His all-around effort earned him the PBA Press Corps Player of the Week honor for the period of June 11 to 15. He beat out San Miguel Beermen’s CJ Perez, Barangay Ginebra’s Stephen Holt, and Phoenix Fuel Masters’ Jason Perkins for the weekly accolade, awarded by sports journalists covering the PBA for broadsheets, tabloids, and online platforms.
Notably, this is the third time this season that Lucero has received the Player of the Week honor, joining Tropang Giga superstar Calvin Oftana as the only players to win the award three times in PBA Season 49.
Magnolia will be hoping Lucero can repeat his stellar performance when they face TNT once again—this time in the Philippine Cup quarterfinals—scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
