In a significant development for Philippine football, Freddy Gonzalez has concluded his tenure as the Philippine Football Federation’s (PFF) Senior National Teams Director and Men’s National Team Manager. The PFF officially confirmed Gonzalez’s departure on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, after widespread speculation.
Gonzalez, a former national team player himself, took on the pivotal role in January 2024, aiming to usher in a new era for both the men’s and women’s national football programs. His time at the helm was marked by a renewed sense of professionalism, an increased influx of exciting young talent, and notable achievements on the field.
Under his leadership, the men’s national team (now often referred to simply as “the Philippines” or “the Nationals”) had a historic run in the 2024 ASEAN Championship, reaching the semifinals for the first time since 2018. This campaign included a memorable victory over regional powerhouse Thailand, a feat not achieved by the Philippines in 52 years in that competition. The men’s team also made a promising start in their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers.
In a statement released by the PFF, Gonzalez expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. “It has been one of the biggest honors of my life to be a part of this team and I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity. This was a very difficult decision to make and one that required much reflection and introspection,” he said. He cited a need to “focus on other pursuits and opportunities, both personal and professional.”
Gonzalez also extended his appreciation to the players, acknowledging their dedication and impact. “I want to thank all of the players for their sacrifices and commitment to the team. They all have changed the culture of the National Team. In such a short time, they have made a difference in Philippine football, for the better. I am looking forward to seeing them become a force in Asia, and will be rooting for them from the sidelines. It was an absolute privilege!”
PFF President John Gutierrez acknowledged Gonzalez’s significant contributions to the federation. “We are grateful for Freddy’s dedication and contributions during his tenure with the PFF, most especially his efforts to advance our national team programs. We truly thank him for his service,” Gutierrez stated. He also assured that the PFF remains committed to building upon the foundations laid by Gonzalez and that efforts will be made to ensure the continued support and thriving of the national team programs.
Gonzalez’s departure comes at a crucial juncture for Philippine football. It follows closely after the resignation of Spanish tactician Albert Capellas as the men’s national team coach, for whom Gonzalez had played a direct hand in hiring. Assistant Team Manager Mikkel Paris will also be departing from his role alongside Gonzalez.
While the PFF has not yet announced a successor for Gonzalez, the federation stated that an announcement regarding the new leadership of the national teams will be made soon. The national teams face a busy schedule ahead, with the men’s team continuing their AFC Asian Cup qualifiers and the Filipinas (women’s national team) preparing for their own AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers and the ASEAN Women’s Championship (MISG Serenity Cup).
Gonzalez’s exit leaves a void in Philippine football, particularly given his strong advocacy for bringing in talented Filipino-foreign players and his efforts to elevate the national team’s operational professionalism. His impact on the recent successes of the national teams is undeniable, and the football community will be keenly watching how the PFF navigates this transition period.
