Alex Eala’s valiant effort falls short against World No. 31 Magda Linette at Nottingham Open

Philippine tennis sensation Alex Eala bowed out of the Lexus Nottingham Open main draw in a hard-fought first-round match, showcasing a valiant effort against world No. 31 Magda Linette of Poland. Despite the 4-6, 3-6 straight-sets defeat on Tuesday (June 17, Manila time), the 20-year-old Filipina displayed remarkable resilience and pushed the seasoned veteran throughout the contest.

Eala, ranked world No. 75, entered the main draw after successfully navigating a challenging qualifying round, winning two grueling three-setters over the weekend. She showed no signs of fatigue as she came out firing against the sixth-seeded Linette, racing to an impressive 3-0 lead in the opening set.

However, Linette, a semifinalist at the 2023 Australian Open and a consistent presence in Grand Slam third rounds, demonstrated her experience and pedigree. The 33-year-old Polish player slowly found her rhythm, reeling off five consecutive games to take a commanding 5-3 lead.

Eala managed to capture one more game to keep the set close, but Linette held serve to clinch the first set 6-4 after a lengthy 51-minute battle. The first set was notably close, with Eala holding multiple break points in Linette’s final three service games, indicative of her persistent pressure.

The second set continued to be a fiercely contested affair. The two players exchanged blows, remaining locked at 2-2. Linette then showcased her ability to seize crucial moments, breaking Eala in the fifth and seventh games to establish a 5-2 advantage. Yet, Eala refused to surrender, fighting back to break Linette in the eighth game, bringing the score to 3-5.

TOUGH BREAK 😥

Alex Eala staged a late comeback in Set 2, but ultimately fell short to surrender a 6-4, 6-3 loss against Magda Linette of Poland in the Round of 32 of Nottingham Open on Tuesday night (Manila time) in Great Britain.

The final game proved to be a testament to Eala’s fighting spirit. Facing multiple match points, she dug deep, saving four of them and even earning an advantage at one point, threatening to extend the set further. However, Linette’s experience ultimately prevailed, and she secured the victory on her fifth match point after an hour and 43 minutes of intense tennis.

While it was a tough exit for Eala, her performance against a top-tier opponent like Linette underscores her continuous development and growing prowess on the WTA Tour. Her ability to consistently challenge higher-ranked players and showcase her never-say-die attitude bodes well for her future endeavors, particularly as she continues her preparations for Wimbledon, which begins later this month.

Eala’s journey at Nottingham, marked by successful qualification and a strong showing against a world No. 31, reaffirms her status as a rising star in Philippine and international tennis.
