Jorge Souza de Brito to make Capital1 coaching debut vs. Creamline in PVL on Tour

The Capital1 Solar Spikers recently made a significant move ahead of the upcoming 2025 season of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) by appointing Jorge Souza de Brito as their new head coach.

De Brito, who also currently serves as the head coach of the Philippine women’s national volleyball team, returns to the PVL for the first time since December 2023, when he stepped down as head coach of the Akari Chargers. Meanwhile, Roger Gorayeb, the franchise’s inaugural head coach, will remain with the team in a new capacity as a consultant.

The Brazilian tactician is set to make his coaching debut for Capital1 during the PVL on Tour on Sunday, June 22, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, when the Solar Spikers face powerhouse Creamline Cool Smashers.

De Brito’s arrival will be welcomed by both the Capital1 management and players, as he is fresh from leading Alas Pilipinas to a historic silver medal finish in the recently concluded Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Nations Cup.

“It’s me. I will be there. I’m going there on Friday after the practice with the national team. I will join the team. I will be there against Creamline,” De Brito said during an appearance at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum.

The 58-year-old reiterated that he does not see any issues “juggling” PVL and Alas duties, considering that the Philippine women’s national team will next be in action in the VTV Cup from June 28 to July 5 in Vietnam.

“It’s never been a problem being a coach with a club. The teams have since followed the calendar, so it’s not a problem. It’s really, really, really okay. It’s good because, being in the national team, you work with guys from different teams with different skills. But also, you have to bring the level up for all the teams. I’m happy because I still can also help the PVL. That’s our best league, and I want to be part of the best, always,” he added.

The veteran coach was also delighted that Capital1 had selected UAAP standout Bella Belen as the top pick in the recent 2025 PVL Rookie Draft. Belen has already impressed for Alas, with De Brito patiently waiting for her professional debut.

“It’s my challenge to keep her focused on her career, to improve, and also to help the team. I think they are trying, in Capital1, to give her the best environment to grow — as a player, as a teammate, and as a leader also. She’s been with the NU team for 11 years. It’s kind of a big change for her, not only changing from the UAAP or college, but also to be a pro. It’s a new exposure for her — to be in the national team for a long time, not as a baby but as a young player. Right now, she will change her status and has to lead the team — and she has the potential to do that,” De Brito concluded.

Capital1 open their PVL on Tour campaign against Creamline on Sunday, June 22, in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, followed by a second consecutive game against the Cignal HD Spikers on Monday, June 23, at the same venue.
