Philippines embraces Asian Beach Games challenge as Cebu 2028 hosting vision takes shape

The Philippines is already looking beyond the shoreline of Sanya, China, turning its attention to a bigger horizon—hosting the 2028 Asian Beach Games in Cebu.

As the 6th Asian Beach Games unfold in this bustling seaport city, key figures from the Philippine delegation—Philippine Sports Commission chairman Pato Gregorio, Chef de Mission Don Caringal, and Asian Beach Games chief executive officer Tats Suzara—came away with a shared conviction and that is the country is ready to take on the challenge.

Their visit to the Main Media Centre and Main Press Centre at the Jinghai Hotel & Resort on Thursday served as both observation and inspiration, with China’s execution of the ongoing Games offering a blueprint for Cebu’s upcoming moment on the international stage.

For Suzara, the message is clear—hosting power should never be underestimated.

“Filipinos are also world-class entertainers, we are very creative. The Filipinos and Cebuanos’ hospitality will make the Games much better in 2028,” Suzara said.

Beyond infrastructure and planning, Suzara pointed to the country’s cultural edge, emphasizing creativity and hospitality as defining strengths that could elevate the Cebu edition of the Games.

Gregorio, meanwhile, expressed optimism not only about hosting but also about the country’s competitiveness, saying the experience in Sanya reinforced his belief in the delegation’s capability.

“I’m confident. That’s why I’m very excited, I’m very happy to be here in Sanya,” said Gregorio.

He also extended early encouragement to Filipino athletes, urging them to rise above globa challenges and focus on performance as the nation continues to navigate difficult times.

“I want to congratulate in advance our athletes. I know they will give their best to win medals especially now with what’s happening in the world. There are many problems. Let’s focus on sports,” Gregorio added.

For Gregorio, the expectation remains firm, whether as hosts or competitors, the Philippines must consistently present its best foot forward on the international stage, backed by preparation and purpose.

Caringal added another layer to the significance of the upcoming event, noting that Cebu 2028 will mark the Philippines’ first time hosting an Olympic Council of Asia-sanctioned competition, with around 45 nations expected to participate.

He also highlighted a symbolic connection to the Games’ history, pointing out Suzara’s long involvement in the Asian Beach Games since its early development in 2008 in Bali.

With Sanya offering a live preview of what lies ahead, the Philippines now returns home not just as observers, but as builders of its own sporting stage—one that aims to match, if not surpass, the standard it just witnessed.
