Jong Uichico, Calvin Oftana fined after separate PBA incidents

It wasn’t a buzzer-beater or a tactical adjustment that put NLEX head coach Jong Uichico in the spotlight—but a moment that broke decades of sideline composure.

For the first time in his long PBA coaching career, Uichico was ejected from a game. Shortly after, he was also handed his first league fine—an unusual double for one of the most respected and measured figures in Philippine basketball.

The incident stemmed from physical contact with a game official late in NLEX’s matchup against Meralco Bolts, a violation that, by rule, leaves little room for interpretation.

“Automatic yun once may contact with game officials,” said Commissioner Willie Marcial.

The moment itself may have seemed minor in isolation, but within league standards, it crossed a firm boundary. Uichico later downplayed the interaction, describing it as brief and non-confrontational.

“Hinolding hands ko lang siya, na-thrown out na ako,” he said of the incident. “Whatever the rule is. Wala naman akong nai-experience before na na-suspend yung head coach for being thrown out of the game.”

True to his observation, the penalty stopped at a P20,000 fine, with no suspension attached. Uichico was back on the bench soon after, guiding NLEX in a narrow loss to San Miguel Beermen.

Still, the episode served as a reminder that even the most seasoned figures are not exempt from the league’s strict enforcement—especially when it comes to protecting game officials.

Uichico wasn’t the only one penalized under automatic rulings. TNT forward Calvin Oftana also incurred a P20,000 fine after being assessed a Flagrant Foul Penalty 2 for contact against Titan Ultra rookie Mark Denver Omega.

Like Uichico, Oftana’s case fell under a non-negotiable category.

“Kapag F2 automatic din yun,” Marcial added.

For Oftana, it was also a first—a career ejection that he maintained was unintentional after making contact with Omega while attempting a play on the ball.

Moments like these highlight a lesser-seen side of professional basketball—where split-second decisions or instinctive reactions can quickly turn into disciplinary action. Whether it’s a coach stepping too close to an official or a player misjudging contact mid-play, the margin for error remains thin.

The league has long emphasized consistency in enforcing these rules, regardless of intent or reputation. Even Nenad Vucinic, now serving as an active consultant for Meralco, previously faced a similar fine after confronting officials at the scorer’s table during a heated finals game.

Different situations, same principle: maintain order, protect officials, and uphold the integrity of the game.

For Uichico, the moment will likely be remembered not as a blemish, but as an outlier in an otherwise steady career. But it also stands as proof that in the PBA, even the calmest hands aren’t immune to the consequences of crossing the line—even briefly.
