The Converge FiberXers solidified their position in the upper half of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup standings by defeating the powerhouse San Miguel Beermen, 100–97, on Wednesday, June 11, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Central to their victory was the performance of Schonny Winston, who fell just a point short of tying his career high. He finished with 26 points on 10-of-11 shooting, along with four rebounds, four assists, and two steals—helping Converge complete an incredible comeback after trailing by as many as 18 points.
He received strong support from Justin Arana, who contributed 21 points and three assists, while De Los Santos added 13 points and three rebounds. Justine Baltazar also chipped in with seven points, 12 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.
Despite his all-around performance, Winston said after the game that it’s the playoffs that really matter.
“This game mattered, but the playoff game is when it really gets turned up and the heat is on you. We played hard today and we got a really good win, but we have to continue to work hard, go back into the lab, and get ready for the playoffs,” Winston said in the post-match press conference.
The former De La Salle University standout is aiming to carry his good form into the playoffs but is reminding himself to remain humble.
“I’m just staying humble. We played hard today, but we have to continue to work hard, go back into the lab, and get ready for the playoffs,” he added.
Converge finished the Philippine Cup elimination stage with a 7–4 win-loss record, placing fifth in the standings. It will be intriguing to see how Converge performs in the postseason, especially after being eliminated in the quarterfinals by the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the previous Commissioner’s Cup.
