Capital1 places faith in new coach Jorge Souza de Brito to turn the team around

The Capital1 Solar Spikers have made a significant move ahead of the upcoming 2025 season of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) by appointing Jorge Souza de Brito as their new head coach.

De Brito, who also currently serves as the head coach of the Philippine women’s national volleyball team, returns to the PVL for the first time since December 2023, when he stepped down as head coach of the Akari Chargers. Meanwhile, Roger Gorayeb, the franchise’s inaugural head coach, will remain with the team in a new capacity as a consultant.

Capital1 owners Milka and Mandy Romero revealed that De Brito’s hiring wasn’t a decision made on the spur of the moment, as they had been in discussions with him for some time before eventually bringing him in as head coach. The Romero duo believe that the Brazilian has the tactical nous and is the perfect person to help rebuild the team as they aim to challenge for titles in the future.

“He’s very technical. We have been in talks with him and we like his style. On Sunday, Alas Pilipinas won against Indonesia, and that goes to show that when you have patience—it’s not a one-day turnaround—but we’d like that in our team: that over time, we will see the growth of Alas and Capital1, with our coach and with this new set of players,” Milka said to the media during the 2025 PVL Rookie Draft ceremony.

The Romero sisters felt it was time for a change at the top, and De Brito was the right man for the job, considering that he has been heading Alas Pilipinas since 2022. During this time, he has led them to three bronze medals in 2024, including the Philippines’ first podium finish in the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Challenge Cup and third-place finishes in two editions of the Southeast Asian Volleyball League.

“Hindi naman siya one decision. Again, we look at statistics, we look at our past from all the conferences. Kami as sisters, we want to win. Yung mindset po namin is to win. So, who will push that? Our players. And what we want is results. So, hopefully with this, we put this in place kami ng sister ko, from coaching staff to players, it’s up to them now. Sila po yung expert, sila po yung nasa court, so we want to see the results this time,” she added.

The Romero sisters understand how it works, considering they themselves are former athletes, and have promised to create a culture of “excellence, camaraderie, and winning” at Capital1.

The franchise also received a major boost recently after selecting University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) standout Bella Belen as the first overall pick in the second Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Rookie Draft. Belen is widely considered to be the next Philippine volleyball superstar and is expected to lead the Solar Spikers to greater heights in the future.
