Alex Eala slides to WTA No. 50 in live rankings after brief stay at career-high 

The timing could not have been more unforgiving for Alex Eala, just days after celebrating a career milestone at No. 29 in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings, the Filipina found herself slipping in the live standings as the Miami Open officially got underway.

The drop wasn’t about form—it was about the calendar. Under the WTA’s rolling 52-week system, points earned from the same tournament the previous year are automatically removed once that event begins again. 

For Eala, that meant losing nearly the entire haul from her stunning semifinal run in Miami in 2025—a breakthrough performance that helped fuel her rapid climb up the rankings.

Around 380 points vanished from her total almost overnight, pulling her down to around No. 50 in the live, unofficial standings. It’s a harsh but familiar reality on tour, where progress isn’t just about winning—it’s about defending what you’ve already achieved.

Now, the same stage that launched her rise presents a different kind of challenge. Eala begins her 2026 Miami campaign in the Round of 64 after earning a first-round bye as one of the tournament’s 32 seeds.

Waiting for her is a seasoned opponent in Laura Siegemund, setting up a match that could dictate how quickly she regains lost ground.

The margin for error is slim.With Miami marking the tail end of the hard-court swing, opportunities to reclaim similar points on the same surface are quickly running out. 

A short stay in the tournament would leave much of that ranking drop intact, at least in the near term. But a deep run—something she has already proven capable of in these conditions—could stabilize her standing and reassert her momentum.

Beyond Miami, a shift in scenery awaits, as Eala is set to compete next at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz from April 6 to 12, signaling her transition into the clay-court season. It’s a different surface, a different rhythm—and another opportunity to rebuild.

For now, though, everything circles back to Miami. The place where she once surged is now where she must respond.
