The second Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Rookie Draft was held on Sunday, June 8, at the Novotel Manila hotel in Quezon City, amid great fanfare and high expectations for the 60 draft applicants.

University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) standout Bella Belen was selected as the first overall pick by the Capital1 Solar Spikers in an expected move, while the Chery Tiggo Crossovers chose De La Salle Lady Spikers standout Jyne Soreno as the eighth overall pick.

Soreno has been one of La Salle’s star players over the past four years, establishing herself as a reliable hitter. She will have the opportunity to reunite with former La Salle stars Ara Galang and Aby Maraño at Chery Tiggo, and she expressed excitement about reconnecting with her former teammates.

“I’m really excited because we trained with F2 Logistics since senior high school in La Salle. So now, I’m really looking forward to being with them again. We have built a strong connection,” Soreno said in a media interaction.

However, it should be noted that Soreno and the Lady Spikers have not trained with the F2 Logistics squad in the past two years, as the Cargo Movers franchise disbanded last season, with players joining different teams.

“Even if we haven’t been together for months or years—especially now that F2 Logistics isn’t in the PVL anymore—the bond is still there because of our shared La Salle roots, the ‘Animo La Salle’ spirit,” she added.

The rookie also hopes to learn under the guidance of coaches Norman Miguel and KungFu Reyes at Chery Tiggo, which she believes won’t be a drastic change from the system employed by legendary La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus.

“I feel so blessed to have this opportunity—from Coach Ramil to Coach Norman. The system and lessons I learned from them, I still carry with me,” she concluded.

Soreno will join a Chery Tiggo squad stacked with options at the wing spiker position, which already includes Galang, Shaya Adorador, Mylene Paat, Jules Samonte, Mary Rhose Dapol, and Cess Robles.

In addition to Soreno, the Crossovers also drafted Erika Deloria in the second round, and Ren Penafiel and Reyann Canete in the final two rounds.
