The 18-year-old Filipino gymnast, Karl Eldrew Yulo secured his first senior-level gold medal in the floor exercise event of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup Series held in Antalya.
Yulo topped the competition with a final score of 14.100, outpacing Ireland’s Eamon Montgomery, who claimed silver with 13.833, and Spain’s Rayderley Zapata, who finished with the bronze medal after scoring 13.333.
Before capturing the gold medal, the younger Yulo had to battle through a tightly contested qualification round. He advanced to the medal stage in fourth place, tying with Montgomery and Norway’s Theodor Gadderud with a score of 13.666.
The triumph marked a milestone moment in his career, as it was his first gold medal at the senior level of the Gymnastics World Cup. Remarkably, he accomplished the feat while dealing with pain in both ankles throughout the competition.
“Nararamdaman na po ng paa ko na sumasakit, kumikirot siya every time tumatalon or nagla-land ako,” Yulo said.
Despite the physical discomfort, the young gymnast emphasized that his biggest adjustment came not from technical changes but from strengthening his mental approach to competition.
“Wala naman po ako masyado binago. Siguro nasa mindset ko na. Hindi po siya sa skills eh, kung paano mo siya maiisip, nasa mind mo. Kung paano mo malalampasan yung kaba o takot,” the gold medalist said.

Yulo has been training under national team coach Reynald Capellan, but according to Cynthia Carrion, there are plans to send him to Japan for further training.
There, he is expected to work under Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya, who previously coached his brother, two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo and the long-term goal is to prepare Eldrew for qualification in the 2028 Summer Olympics.
A week before his victory in Turkey, Yulo also competed in the World Cup leg in Baku, where he finished fourth in the floor exercise and seventh in the horizontal bar.
The promising Filipino gymnast will continue his campaign in the World Cup circuit, with the next stop scheduled in Cairo from April 3 to 6.
Beyond the medal itself, Yulo’s victory represents another step in building the next generation of Philippine gymnastics.
Following the global success of his older brother, Karl Eldrew is now carving out his own path on the international stage, showing that the country’s gymnastics program continues to produce athletes capable of competing and winning against the world’s best.
