Philippine gymnastics icon Carlos Yulo enjoyed a successful return to the mat in his first international competition since making history for the Philippines at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.
Yulo was unable to complete a four-peat in the vault and parallel bars at the 2025 Senior Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jecheon, South Korea. However, he still racked up medals for Team Philippines by securing a total of one gold and three bronze medals in the events he competed in.
The 25-year-old wrapped up his campaign at the Senior Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships by winning two bronze medals on Sunday, June 8 — one in the vault and another in the parallel bars. This marked a strong return to international competition for Yulo, as he managed to remain competitive despite limited training and showed no signs of rust on the floor.
Following his strong showing in South Korea, Yulo does not plan to rest. He is expected to join fellow members of the Philippine gymnastics team in a training camp as part of their preparations for the upcoming World Championships, scheduled to take place from October 19 to 25 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) president Cynthia Carrion Norton praised Yulo’s performance in the championships, especially considering his busy schedule prior to the event.
“Carlos, in spite of all his activities in Manila due to being a double-gold medalist, was happy to compete in the Asian Championships to learn more about his skills and the new code of points. I was so proud of them and how they represented the Philippines,” Carrion said.
In addition to Yulo, John Ivan Cruz, Miguel Besana, and Ace de Leon will travel to Japan for the training camp. Yulo’s younger brother, Karl Eldrew, will also join them in Japan to train under Minehiro Kugimiya — his older brother’s former coach, under whom Carlos learned the skills that have served him so well in global competitions.
