Filipina5 breaks through with historic first win at ASEAN Women’s Futsal Championship

Progress for the Philippine women’s futsal program finally translated into a breakthrough result.

After a winless campaign in the tournament’s inaugural edition, the Filipina5 opened their 2026 ASEAN Women’s Futsal Championship run with a historic 1-0 victory over the Myanmar women’s national futsal team on Tuesday at Terminal 21 Korat in Nakhon Ratchasima.

The breakthrough moment came midway through the first half when Inday Tolentin found space in the 14th minute and converted what would stand as the match’s only goal. From there, the Filipina5 relied on disciplined defending and controlled possession to preserve the slim advantage until the final whistle.

The result marked a significant step forward for the Philippine squad, which had previously struggled to secure a win during the tournament’s first staging at PhilSports Arena in Pasig in 2024. In that campaign, the team managed just one draw—also against Myanmar—alongside four losses.

With the victory, the Filipina5 moved into second place in Group B, trailing the Australia women’s national futsal team, which opened its campaign with a 2-0 win over the Vietnam women’s national futsal team on goal difference.

More importantly, the win provides early momentum for a squad looking to establish consistency at the regional level. The Philippines continues its group-stage schedule against Vietnam on Wednesday before closing its preliminary round against Myanmar on Thursday.

For a developing program still building its competitive identity, the narrow victory may represent more than just three points—it signals a growing belief that the Filipina5 are beginning to turn experience into results.
