Former Capital1 coach Roger Gorayeb joins Strong Group as their women’s volleyball consultant

Roger Gorayeb was recently released by Premier Volleyball League (PVL) team, the Capital1 Solar Spikers, as their head coach, with the legendary tactician transitioning to a consultant role with the franchise.

With extra time on his hands, Gorayeb’s services are highly valued across the Philippine volleyball landscape and Strong Group Athletics (SGA) have moved and signed him as a consultant for its girls’ and women’s volleyball programs.

Strong Group announced Gorayeb’s acquisition on its various social media platforms on Thursday, June 5.

“It’s truly an honor to have coach Roger Gorayeb guiding our student-athletes from the University of the Philippines, University of Santos Tomas, Saint Benilde, and Letran. His wealth of experience and championship pedigree will be an incredible asset to all our teams, both on and off the court,” a statement from SGA’s volleyball head Kiara Cruz read.

Gorayeb is widely recognized as one of the best coaches in Philippine volleyball history, credited with building the Solar Spikers from scratch to one of the most promising teams in the PVL. He is a 39-time NCAA champion, steering the Lady Stags to 22 NCAA titles, 11 in high school, and six in beach volleyball, while also winning the elusive Grand Slam in the V-League in 2015.

Gorayeb confirmed in a media interaction that the role for SGA is a privilege and an honor.

“Masaya ako kasi mayroon pa palang nagtitiwala sa akin. Sobrang sarap sa feeling kasi hindi ako mawawala sa volleyball. Passion ko talaga magturo ng mga bata. Super saya,” Gorayeb stated.

SGA owner Frank Lao is eager to develop young volleyball talent in the Philippines with University of the Philippines, University of Santos Tomas, Saint Benilde, and Letran part of their program, with the UST being the most recent addition to their volleyball program.

Notably, Gorayeb’s consultancy role with SGA has no fixed time limit, adding that the legendary tactician will be with the franchise “for as long as he can mentor our athletes.”
