‘Ultimate Swiss Army knife’: LeBron James reveals his all-time favorite teammate

Los Angeles Lakers icon LeBron James is widely recognized to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest player in National Basketball Association (NBA) history, as evidenced by his illustrious achievements, including being the league’s all-time record scorer.

James displayed why he is a contender for the Greatest of All Time Status, as he continued to perform at an elite level at the age of 40 during the 2024-25 season. He averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game, easily emerging as the Lakers’ best player. His intense dedication to diet and fitness along with his skills has put him on track to return to the court for his 23rd season, which would allow him to break the record he currently shares with NBA legend Vince Carter.

Over the course of his 22-year long career in the NBA, James has played for teams including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and at present with the Los Angeles Lakers. During this time he has played with numerous legends of the game and during the most recent episode of his podcast “Mind the Game” co-hosted with NBA legend Steve Nash, James opened up on his all-time favorite teammate.

The 40-year-old had a surprising answer and that was his former Lakers teammate and current Oklahoma City Thunder star Alex Caruso.

“They come off the bench with one of my favorite teammates of all time in Alex Caruso, who is like the ultimate Swiss Army knife. We have literally seen him guard Giannis Antetokounmpo, we have seen him guard Nikola Jokic, we have seen him guard Anthony Edwards, Julius Randle, Jamal Murray – he’s taken on everyone this postseason,” James stated.

“You look at the plus/minus after the game – AC will have five points, three rebounds, two assists – and his plus/minus will be a damn plus -17,” he added.

James does make a valid point of his chemistry with Caruso, as the duo recorded a staggering +18.6 net rating in the 560 minutes they shared on the court during regular-season play – the highest of any duo that have played more than 500 minutes together.

After going undrafted in the 2016 NBA draft, Caruso made his NBA debut with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017 and since then has gone on to play for the Chicago Bulls and now Oklahoma City Thunder. He experienced success with the Lakers, winning the 2020 NBA championship with the franchise.

The 31-year-old has played a key role in the Thunder’s run to the 2024-25 NBA Finals and will be eager to add to his title collection by leading them to their maiden league championship.
