Philippine basketball star Kevin Quiambao is focusing on his future as he takes steps towards realizing his dream of becoming the first full-blooded Filipino to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Quiambao, who is a two-time University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Most Valuable Player (MVP) winner with the De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers, confirmed in a media interaction that he is set to fly to the United States next week for a personal training camp, aimed at preparing him with the skills and fitness to make a serious approach at making the NBA.
“I’m flying out next week to the US for training. I’ll be going there by myself, so hopefully, good things will happen,” Quiambao said during an Adidas event in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.
The 24-year-old recently signed a three-year extension with Goyang Sono Skygunners in the Korean Basketball League (KBL) and is making the most of the offseason to improve himself.
“No one knows what the future holds for me. For now, I’m working as hard as I can. I’m super positive. It’s all for gain, and I have nothing to lose. If I don’t get an opportunity, I’ll just go back to Korea,” he added.
The forward signed with the Skygunners in December 2024, and despite suffering from an ankle injury in his debut season for Goyang Sono, he still averaged 16.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.3 steals per game in 23 appearances for the club in the 2024-25 season.
“It felt incomplete. I only played 23 games, so I’m excited to have a full season next time,” Quiambao concluded.
It is understood that the Skygunners were impressed with Quiambao’s performances despite dealing with an injury and have high hopes for him next season.
It will be intriguing to see whether Quiambao will be able to achieve his dream of playing in the NBA in the future, especially as another Filipino superstar Kai Sotto has already made huge strides towards it by playing in the NBA Summer League.
