Alex Eala braces for biggest test yet against Camille Osorio in PH Women’s Open quarterfinals

Buoyed by the familiar comfort of home soil and growing confidence with every match, Alex Eala continues to build momentum at the Philippine Women’s Open.

The 20-year-old Filipina stamped her place in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night after overpowering Japan’s Himeno Sakatsume, 6-4, 6-0, in a performance that showcased both composure and control.

After a competitive opening set, Eala raised her level dramatically, sweeping the second frame to the delight of the home crowd.

It was the latest convincing statement in what has been a steadily rising campaign for the Filipina ace. Earlier in the tournament, Eala breezed past Russia’s Alina Charaeva in the round of 32, 6-1, 6-2, signaling early that she was locked in and ready for a deep run.

Awaiting her in the last eight is a far sterner challenge in Colombia’s Camila Osorio, a seasoned tour regular and three-time WTA 250 singles champion.

Ranked No. 84 in the world, Osorio brings pedigree and experience, having lifted all three of her tour titles on home soil in Colombia across 2021, 2024, and 2025.

The Colombian arrived in Manila looking to rebound after a narrow first-round loss at the Australian Open, where she pushed world No. 33 Ann Li to the limit in a three-set thriller.

Since then, Osorio has found her rhythm, grinding out a three-set victory over Japan’s Mai Hontama in the round of 16 before dispatching Sakura Hosogi, 6-4, 6-3, to secure her own quarterfinal berth.

Thursday night’s clash will mark the first professional meeting between Eala and Osorio, with the spotlight firmly fixed on Center Court at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m., as Eala looks to ride the wave of home support against one of the toughest tests of her tournament so far.
