In a tournament marked by early exits and unexpected twists, Alex Eala remains the lone home bet keeping Philippine hopes alive at the inaugural WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open.
After three hours of rain delayed the Day Two schedule, 22-year-old wildcard Kaye Anne Emana succumbed to Russia’s Tatiana Prozorova, 1-6, 0-6, in a brief 42-minute match on Court 1 of the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Emana’s loss followed the earlier departures of Tennielle Madis and Elizabeth Abarquez, leaving Eala as the last Filipino standing in the main draw.
“Second-seeded Eala, who ousted Russian Alina Charaeva, 6-1, 6-2 on Monday night, will play her round-of-16 match on Wednesday and is set to face either Nao Hibino or Himeno Sakatsume.”

Meanwhile, the women’s draw produced its share of drama. Top seed Tatjana Maria (WTA No. 42) needed a tiebreak in the first set to overcome France’s Leolia Jeanjean, eventually advancing 7-6(5), 6-4. Chinese qualifier Ma Ye-xin (WTA No. 225) pulled off a major upset by eliminating world No. 98 Darja Semenistaja to reach the second round. Interestingly, no qualifier advanced past the first round in the main draw, highlighting the unpredictability of the Philippine tournament.
For Eala, the spotlight is now firmly on her as the home favorite, with fans eager to see her carry the Philippine flag forward on the country’s first WTA stage.
With her composure and form from Monday’s commanding win over Charaeva, Eala’s clash against Sakatsume promises to be a must-watch, as she looks to turn home advantage into a deeper run in the competition.
