Golden State Warriors icon Stephen Curry is widely recognized as one of the greatest players in National Basketball Association (NBA) history and is credited with revolutionizing the way the game is played in the modern era.
Curry, along with LeBron James, is one of the two biggest draws in the NBA—an incredible feat considering that, unlike many other elite players, he stands at just 6’3” and lacks the physical dominance typical of the league’s top stars.
The 37-year-old will go down as the greatest shooter in NBA history, but another often-overlooked facet of his game is his off-the-ball movement. Even at his advancing age, Curry manages to outrun most of his opponents, thanks to his elite conditioning.
In a 2021 interview with Rex Chapman, Curry opened up about how he manages to dominate players who are physically bigger and more gifted than he is.
“A lot of it is probably hand-eye coordination, the footwork, and as a shooter, you are just blessed with a certain level of natural skill. But then you add to that with the work, the reps, and the pursuit of perfection. I try to counter [physical mismatches] by never standing in the same spot for more than a second, covering as much ground as possible, and trying to never get tired,” Curry said.
“The biggest piece of advice for any young kid playing the game is to be comfortable with who you are as a basketball player. I had temptations of thinking, ‘I wish I could dunk,’ or ‘I wish I could just drive down the lane.’ You always get fascinated by what you can’t do. I see LeBron and think, ‘I wish I could do some of the things he can do physically.’ But at the end of the day, I’m my own type of basketball player,” he added.
While shooting came naturally to Curry, he never stopped working hard on his strength and conditioning in the gym—a habit that helped him become the elite player he is today.
Curry is a four-time NBA champion, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), the 2022 NBA Finals MVP, a two-time NBA All-Star Game MVP, a two-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion, a two-time NBA scoring champion, the 2016 NBA steals leader, and an 11-time NBA All-Star, among numerous other honors.
