Philippine boxing legend Manny Pacquiao has officially announced his return to the ring, ending a four-year hiatus from professional boxing. The former eight-division world champion confirmed via social media that he will challenge current WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios on July 19 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

“I’m back. On July 19, I return to the ring to face WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Let’s make history!” Pacquiao posted on X (formerly Twitter).

This marks Pacquiao’s first professional fight since his unanimous decision loss to Yordenis Ugas in August 2021 for the WBA super welterweight title—a belt that had previously been stripped from him due to inactivity. In the interim, he has only participated in exhibition bouts.

Now 46, Pacquiao has dismissed concerns about his age and the challenge of facing Barrios, who is 16 years younger. Speaking at a press conference, Pacquiao emphasized that he still possesses the hunger and ability to compete at the highest level.

“I’m here to show everyone that I still have what it takes. I’m excited for this challenge. I’m not taking anything lightly. I work hard, push myself to the limit, and I can assure you I’ll be in top condition for this fight.”

He also acknowledged the significance of fighting not just for himself but for the Filipino people.

“People say I’m too old, that I’ve done it all. But I still have the fire. I’m fighting for my country—to show the world that Filipinos never give up. I know Barrios can entertain the fans, and together we’ll put on a great show.”

Despite the long layoff, Pacquiao believes he is physically ready.

“My body feels young. I always bring surprises in every fight. I know that this will be another memorable one for the fans.”

For the bout, Pacquiao has reunited with his legendary trainer Freddie Roach, with whom he built one of the most iconic partnerships in boxing history. He is currently training in Las Vegas, where media interest has already begun to intensify.

Pacquiao holds a professional record of 62 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws. A victory over Barrios would earn him his 13th career welterweight title, and his first since defeating Miguel Cotto for the WBO welterweight belt in 2009 via 12th-round TKO.

Originally scheduled to take place at the T-Mobile Arena, the fight was moved to the MGM Grand due to a prior event booking. The match will reportedly be available on PBC on Prime Video pay-per-view.
