The Capital1 Solar Spikers have made a significant move ahead of the upcoming 2025 season of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) by appointing Jorge Souza de Brito as their new head coach.
De Brito, who also currently serves as the head coach of the Philippine women’s national volleyball team, returns to the PVL for the first time since December 2023, when he stepped down as head coach of the Akari Chargers. Meanwhile, Roger Gorayeb, the franchise’s inaugural head coach, will remain with the team in a new capacity as a consultant.
Capital1 management announced De Brito’s appointment on their various social media platforms on Monday, June 2, stating:
“Capital1 Solar Spikers have appointed Jorge Souza de Brito, current head coach of Alas Pilipinas, as their franchise head coach. Roger Gorayeb will now transition to a new role as team consultant.”
De Brito expressed his excitement about the role in an interview with the Inquirer:
“I’m very happy to be back in the PVL. Most of the Alas players play there or will be in the coming seasons. It is also an honor and privilege to work with the legend Roger Gorayeb.”
The Brazilian tactician faces a challenging task, as he looks to rejuvenate a Capital1 squad that finished 11th out of 12 teams in the 2024–25 PVL All-Filipino Conference. The team struggled in the absence of star import Marina Tushova, who had impressed during the Reinforced Conference.
However, Capital1 landed a major opportunity after winning the right to the first overall pick in the upcoming 2025 PVL Rookie Draft. The Solar Spikers are expected to select three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP) Bella Belen, who is widely considered the future of Philippine volleyball, especially after confirming her entry into the draft.
All eyes will be on how Capital1 performs in the upcoming PVL season as the franchise aims to overhaul its program and rise up the rankings.
