Eumir Marcial to focus on professional boxing career, not Asian Games, after SEA Games triumph

Eumir Marcial has firmly cemented his place as one of the greatest boxers in Philippine history, earning accolades for the country across multiple international competitions, including the 2020 Olympic Games, Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games, and World Championships.

Marcial continued his winning ways at the recent 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, capturing his fifth SEA Games gold medal — a historic feat in the competition. While he expressed pride in representing the Philippines, the 30-year-old middleweight is now shifting his focus to his professional boxing career rather than preparing for the upcoming Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.

Marcial currently holds the World Boxing Council (WBC) International middleweight title, a prestigious regional belt he claimed by defeating Venezuela’s Eddy Colmenares during the 50th anniversary of the “Thrilla in Manila” in the Philippine capital.

“As of now, after winning my fifth SEA Games gold, I will rest and will focus on my professional career. Next year, I am preparing for a huge bout. This time, I am the WBC champion, and I want to step up,” Marcial said in a media interaction.

He also signaled his aspirations to compete for a world championship in the near future. “For sure next year I will have more fights, and they will give me more opportunities to fight for a world championship title. At this moment, I am not thinking about the Asian Games yet. But if there is another chance to represent the country, it’s 100 percent for me, I will go,” he added.

Marcial had initially been hesitant to participate in the SEA Games, wanting to give other Filipino boxers an opportunity to compete. His decision to join ultimately paid off, as he was the lone Filipino boxer to clinch a gold medal in Thailand.

In the men’s 80-kilogram final, Marcial defeated Indonesia’s Maikhel Muskita, helping the Philippine boxing contingent conclude the competition with one gold, three silvers, and six bronze medals.

With an undefeated professional record of 7-0, including four knockouts, the next chapters in Marcial’s career promise even more excitement. Fans and boxing enthusiasts alike will be watching closely to see how the Filipino star transitions his international success into the professional arena.
