World No. 9 Mirra Andreeva expressed her gratitude to Filipino tennis star Alex Eala after their women’s singles match at the 2025 MGM Macau Tennis Masters on Sunday, praising the spirited but friendly nature of their contest.
Andreeva, who had skipped the first day of the invitational event due to illness, returned to the court at the Macao Forum and defeated Eala in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to help Team Conchita Martinez clinch the overall title.
Andreeva offered special thanks to Eala for the tone of the contest, acknowledging her own physical limitations.
“It was a tough match today,” Andreeva said during the on-court interview.
“I really have to thank Alex for taking it easy on me today, because otherwise I felt like I wouldn’t stand a chance against her,” Andreeva said.

Andreeva had shown flashes of her top-10 ability throughout the match, but fatigue began to surface as the second set wore on.
Despite the loss, Eala put up a competitive effort against her higher-ranked opponent. She fought back in the first set, holding serve and forcing extended rallies, before Andreeva pulled ahead late in both sets.
Eala’s performance in Macau capped off a memorable 2025 season that saw her win her first WTA Tour title, reach a career-high ranking, and capture a gold medal at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games for the Philippines.
For Andreeva, the Macau exhibition also served as key preparation ahead of the 2026 Australian Open, where both she and Eala are expected to compete in the main draw.
