Marck Espejo set for professional stint in Taiwan after SEA Games

Veteran Filipino volleyball star Marck Espejo is set to continue his professional career overseas with a club in Taiwan, following his instrumental role in helping Alas Pilipinas Men’s Volleyball Team capture the bronze medal at the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Espejo, 28, confirmed that he will return to the Philippines to rest and process paperwork before joining his new club in Taiwan, although he has not yet disclosed the name of the team.

The outside hitter was a key figure for the Philippines in Bangkok, delivering a standout performance in the bronze-medal match against Vietnam. 

Espejo was integral as the Filipinos rallied from a two-set deficit to secure the podium finish.

Espejo’s move to Taiwan will add to an extensive international resume that includes multiple stints in Japan’s V.League, as well as appearances in Thailand and Bahrain.

His 2025 campaign saw him begin the year with Kubota Spears Osaka in Japan before returning to domestic action with the Criss Cross King Crunchers in the Spikers’ Turf Open Conference.

Alas Pilipinas endured a challenging SEA Games tournament but ultimately delivered a morale-boosting result. After losing to host Thailand in the semifinals, the team responded with a gritty performance in the bronze medal contest, with Espejo and veteran teammate Bryan Bagunas leading the charge.

Espejo stressed his continued commitment to the national team, saying he intends to answer future call-ups “as long as my body allows,” and hopes to provide leadership to younger players coming through the national program.

The Philippines’ bronze medal in Bangkok marked its first SEA Games volleyball podium finish in several editions. This result capped a year of significant international exposure for the national team, including its campaign at the 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship.
