Eumir Marcial eager to take home another gold medal for PH in SEA Games

Filipino standout Eumir Marcial is preparing for a formidable challenge in the men’s boxing finals as he pursues another gold medal for the Philippines at the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Marcial, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist and four-time reigning SEA Games champion, punched his ticket to the gold medal match in the men’s 80-kilogram division after a dominant semifinal performance against Vietnam’s Nguyen Manh Cuong on Wednesday at the Chulalongkorn Sports Center.

The Filipino leaned into a powerful right hook to finish the bout with a technical knockout in the second round, landing a decisive blow that sent Nguyen to the canvas and prompted the referee to stop the contest with 35 seconds left.

Marcial’s emphatic victory was a statement after earlier bouts in the Games that saw his compatriots experience mixed results, including an unexpected loss by fellow pro boxer Weljon Mindoro.

Entering the finals, Marcial acknowledged the rising level of competition, saying he is preparing for a tough battle against his upcoming opponent, Thailand’s Yomkhot Jakkapong, a recent SEA Games gold medalist in the heavyweight division.

“The finals will be an all-out war. We know he defeated an opponent from the host country. We all know that here in Bangkok you have to knock down your opponent for a chance to win but he took it with an impressive display of his skills,” Marcial said.

The upcoming matchup marks a key moment in Marcial’s quest to extend his regional dominance. He has historically been a strong force in Southeast Asian boxing, including multiple victories over Nguyen, whom he also knocked out in the 2019 SEA Games and defeated on points in subsequent international competition.

The finals are set for Friday, where Marcial will look to add another gold to the Philippines’ tally and continue his run as one of the nation’s premier boxing talents on the regional stage.
