From the pros to the amateurs, Islay Bomogao captures gold in SEA Games

Filipino muay thai standout Islay Erika Bomogao etched her name into Philippine history on Wednesday, outlasting a formidable Thai opponent to capture the women’s 45-kilogram gold medal at the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held at Lumpinee Boxing Stadium.

Bomogao sealed the title with a hard-fought 29–28 victory over Thailand’s Arissara Noon-Eiad.

The win marked a milestone for Bomogao, who continues to build on her reputation as one of the Philippines’ premier combat athletes.

The 25-year-old came into the final buoyed by a semifinal victory over Vietnam’s Mai Hoang Khanh, a bout that ended controversially after the Vietnamese camp chose to withdraw. 

Bomogao was leading 20–18 after two rounds when her opponent’s corner pulled their fighter from the contest, handing the Filipino the decision and a spot in the gold medal bout.

In the final against the host country’s representative, she edged out a one-point win in a razor-thin decision against one of Thailand’s best, a country widely regarded as the heartland of muay thai.

Bomogao’s success also reflects the growing prominence of Filipino fighters in the international muay thai scene. 

Her achievements come on the heels of a burgeoning professional career highlighted by success abroad, including notable wins in ONE Championship events, where she demonstrated her striking prowess against international competition.
