Meralco’s CJ Cansino named PBA Player of the Week for December 10 to 14

The Meralco Bolts have surged at the right time in the 2025 PBA Philippine Cup, winning their last three games to clinch a quarterfinal berth and keep their bid for a twice-to-beat advantage firmly alive.

At the heart of Meralco’s late push is the stellar play of shooting guard CJ Cansino, who has taken on a bigger offensive role and delivered in a major way. Cansino capped a remarkable week by sweeping the Best Player of the Game honors in all three victories.

He opened the stretch with a 22-point outing on 8-of-13 shooting, adding four rebounds, one assist, and one steal in Meralco’s 88-73 win over the Phoenix Fuel Masters at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. Two days later, he followed it up with another team-high performance, tallying 20 points, eight rebounds, and a steal in the Bolts’ dominant 120-87 victory over the Terrafirma Dyip at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Cansino then put an exclamation point on his perfect week with a career-high 29 points, along with five rebounds and an assist, on 10-of-17 shooting in Meralco’s 105-84 win on Sunday, December 14, once again at the Ynares Center. The victory officially secured the Bolts’ place in the quarterfinals.

Meralco head coach Luigi Trillo praised the 26-year-old guard not only for his scoring but also for his all-around contributions during a crucial stretch of the conference.

“The good thing about CJ is that he didn’t just score well—he also played defense,” Trillo said. “Against Converge, rookie Juan Gomez de Liano had to bleed for his points in the fourth quarter. CJ has really been playing well since he recovered from a sprain earlier in the conference.”

Cansino’s outstanding performances earned him the PBA Press Corps’ Player of the Week honors for the period of December 10 to 14, as he unanimously edged out Titan Ultra Kings forward Calvin Abueva and TNT Tropang Giga guard Jordan Heading for the award given by scribes covering Asia’s oldest professional basketball league.

Cansino expressed hope that Meralco can carry its momentum into the playoffs.

“Sana magtuloy-tuloy ang ganda ng sistema na nilalaro namin,” he said.

Cansino currently leads Meralco in scoring in the Philippine Cup with an average of 19.0 points per game. Over the past week, he averaged 23.7 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting an efficient 56 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range. He also became the first PBA player to sweep Best Player of the Game honors in a three-game stretch since Roger Pogoy accomplished the feat for TNT from June 18 to 25 during last season’s Philippine Cup playoffs.
