Hokett Delos Santos stamps name in PH athletics after bagging gold medal in SEA Games

Filipino trackster Hokett Delos Santos cemented himself as the Philippines’ future in athletics after capturing the gold medal in the decathlon events at the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

 

The gold medal marks Delos Santos’ first in the tournament, already adding to his stacked trophy case alongside several UAAP medals, and he had previously won the silver medal in the pole vault event under mentor and friend EJ Obiena, who placed first in 2023.

 

Delos Santos, who also excels in pole vault, scored 6,917 points, overtaking fellow Filipino Janry Ubas en route to the gold.

 

The UST product started slowly after placing fourth and last in the 100-meter dash and long jump events, respectively. 

 

However, a second-place finish in shot put, followed by another fourth-place finish in the high jump category,

 

Delos Santos finished Day 1 by reigning in the 400-meter dash event with a 49.44-second time.

It was on Day 2 when the Filipino really shined, starting the day on top in the 110-meter hurdles event before placing second in the discus throw.

 

At his signature event, the pole vault, Delos Santos finished in second place after clearing 4.8 meters, before another in second place in the javelin throw.

 

Finally, Delos Santos secured his gold medal with a first-place finish in the 1500-meter run.

 

Meanwhile, Ubas missed out on the podium with 6,573 points, while two-time defending champion Suttisak Singkhon and Indonesia’s Richaan Fauzan rounded out the podium spots with silver and bronze medals, respectively.
