Gilas 3×3 Women crash out after painful late collapse against Malaysia 

Gilas Pilipinas’ 3×3 women’s team saw their Southeast Asian Games campaign come to an abrupt and painful end on Wednesday night, bowing to Malaysia, 21–19, in a tense finish at the Nimibutr Stadium that encapsulated their turbulent run in Group A.

What made the exit sting even more was how close the Nationals came to rewriting their fortunes. 

After a rocky loss to Indonesia earlier in the day, 21–15, the quartet of Kaye Pingol, Jhaz Joson, Mikka Cacho, and Tantoy Ferrer entered their final assignment knowing only a victory would keep them alive. 

And for a moment, they looked every bit like a team ready to fight their way back.

With the score at 18–16, Gilas strung together three unanswered points—punctuated by a strong Ferrer drive—reigniting hopes of a semifinal berth.

But as quickly as the momentum swung their way, it slipped from their grasp. 

Malaysia answered with a clutch two-pointer that triggered a 4–0 burst, and suddenly the Philippines’ composure at the rim vanished. Layups rolled out, free throws went unconverted, and the window to advance slammed shut.

The loss ended the Filipinas’ bid to return to the podium. After settling for silver in 2023 behind Vietnam and missing out on the medals in 2022, the 2025 group hoped this would be their breakthrough year. 

Instead, they were left watching Indonesia and Malaysia move on from Group A, their own dreams halted by missed chances in the most crucial minutes.

It was a harsh ending for a team that showed flashes of brilliance—but in 3×3, where every possession is magnified, even the smallest lapse can define an entire tournament.
