The 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) kick off in Bangkok, Thailand, from December 9 to 20, with the Philippines set to field one of its largest delegations ever — a 1,600-strong contingent competing across multiple sports.

Among them is the Philippine women’s national cricket team, aiming to turn heads in Bangkok as they look to improve on their strong showing in the previous edition. Banking on experience, chemistry, and a busy competitive calendar, the squad is determined to deliver another podium finish.

The team arrived in Bangkok on Sunday, December 7, and head coach Derek Budd expressed confidence in the group’s readiness.

“We have got really big shoes to fill from the last SEA Games. Like I said, two silvers. So, we are going to really try and do our best to win a medal. The competition this year is very, very strong. So we have to just respect everyone,” Budd said.

The roster features players based in the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Australia — all coming off active seasons. Budd believes this continuity will be a major advantage.

“So we have been lucky this year where we have toured. This will be our fifth tour in 12 months. So the group of girls, they know each other well now. We have some new ones coming for SEA Games. But everyone is familiar with their games now.

“So everyone is playing regularly now. So everyone should be ready. The fitness has been good. So the preparation has all been there. It’s now we just have to go out and deliver. We are all very excited to get the first game under our belt,” he added.

Budd identified hosts Thailand and Indonesia as the Philippines’ toughest rivals but remains optimistic about his team’s chances.

“If we bring our A-game, I think then we have got a very good chance of meddling. But with Thailand, the hosts, the strongest nation, I think to get past them is going to be a real challenge. And Indonesia, again, very strong.

“We played them earlier this year, a very, very good team. So they are going to be the names to look out for. But like I said, if all the girls perform and do their very best, then we have got a very good chance,” Budd concluded.

After capturing two silver medals in Cambodia, the women’s cricket team now looks to break through for gold as they open their 2025 SEA Games campaign against Myanmar on Tuesday, December 9.
